Some of the best recipes don’t begin with a cookbook.
They begin with a story.
Nanna grew up during the Depression years and the Second World War, when nothing was wasted and every meal on the table had been earned through hard work. Families couldn’t simply drive to the supermarket whenever they needed something. They grew what they could, made what they could, and appreciated every meal that was shared around the table.
Behind the family home was a productive vegetable garden, carefully tended by Nanna’s father. Fresh vegetables were picked as they were needed, and tucked away in the backyard were worm beds, ready for the next fishing trip. Like many Australian families of the time, food wasn’t just bought—it was grown, caught or hunted.
Nanna’s father was also an accomplished huntsman. Ducks, rabbits and fish regularly found their way onto the family table, providing wholesome meals that fed everyone. While working in the mining industry to support his family, he lived a life that was closely connected to the land. In his younger years he travelled by horseback before eventually saving enough money to buy himself a motor car—a milestone that represented years of determination and hard work.
Those experiences shaped the way Nanna cooked for the rest of her life.
Her recipes were never about being extravagant. They were about making the most of what you had, feeding a hungry family, and ensuring nobody left the table wanting more. Simple ingredients became nourishing meals. Leftovers became tomorrow’s lunch. Nothing was wasted because everything had value.
Here you’ll find the meals that have filled our family’s table for generations. Some are traditional country favourites, others are treasured family recipes that have never been written down until now. They’re the kind of meals that bring everyone home—the smell of a roast in the oven, fresh scones cooling on the bench, hearty casseroles, homemade slices, puddings, and the comfort food that seems to make everything feel just a little bit better.
These recipes are more than instructions.
They are a record of a generation that understood resilience, resourcefulness and gratitude. They remind us that some of life’s richest memories aren’t found in expensive ingredients or complicated techniques, but in the simple act of gathering around a table with the people you love.
We hope you’ll enjoy cooking these meals as much as our family has enjoyed sharing them over the years. And perhaps, as you make them in your own kitchen, you’ll create a few stories of your own to pass on to the next generation.
