Public holiday or not, life on the property never really slows down. Between smoking our first batch of homemade bacon and ham, tackling the endless housework, and preparing for another hectic week ahead, today was one of those “quiet but busy” country days that somehow still felt a little peaceful. 🥓🐾

A day off on the property still looks like work, even when you smoke bacon !
Tomorrow the chaos starts again…
but today smells like smoked ham, fresh country air, and that feeling of satisfaction when you are getting the jobs done.
Today might be a public holiday for most people…
but around here, there’s always something that needs doing.
Today started slower than usual, which honestly felt nice for a change. No rushing to buses, no alarms dragging us out of bed before daylight, and no race against the clock trying to juggle work, school and everything in between.
Instead, the morning was spent helping my husband with our latest project — bagging up bacon and ham cuts after days of soaking in brine and hanging to dry.
It’s our first real attempt at making our own ham and bacon properly from pigs we’ve raised ourselves. Pork, sausages, mince… and now hopefully bacon worth talking about.
One piece was chosen for the Weber smoker.
Low and slow.
Before long, that beautiful smoky smell started drifting through the house & yard. One of those smells that instantly makes a house feel like home. Every time the breeze picked up, you could smell it again.
Of course, while all that was happening, the usual jobs around the place never stopped either.
Washing waiting.
Housework needing attention.
Bits and pieces piling up in every direction.
I kept thinking about that old saying:
“All night kitchen and Chinese laundry.”
Honestly… some days that description still fits perfectly.
Still, there was something nice about today.
No big plans.
No rushing around town.
Just home, smoke in the air, jobs getting done, and one last slower day before the chaos of routine starts all over again tomorrow.
And if we’re lucky… maybe we’ll even sit down for a little rest this afternoon. 🥓🐾
